The Rune-Songs

Have you ever wondered what it means to sing the runes themselves?

Explore how the rune-songs of the Eddas and sagas reveal that carving was never enough. Breath and voice awakened the runes, shaping seiðr in practice.

The sagas and poems tell us that runes were carved and then sung over. Sigrdrífumál speaks of rune-songs for victory, healing, and protection. Egils saga shows runes being re-carved and sung to repair a mistake. The Eddic poems remind us that carving was not enough. Breath and voice awakened what the runes carried.

The rune-songs are different from Odin’s eighteen charms. They are not personal wisdom kept by the All-Father, but chants tied directly to the staves themselves. They remind us that the power of runes was never silent. It was voice and vibration that turned wood and stone into living magic.

In my own practice, I sing rune names not only aloud but also as hums, growls, and tones. Sometimes I use them for protection. Sometimes I use them to steady the home or ease storms. Always the voice is what carries the rune from symbol into action.

This is part of my Galdr Collection on Patreon, where I share historical sources, chant libraries, and personal practice so you can learn how to use your own voice with the runes.

If you want to learn seiðr in a way that honors history and brings it alive in practice, join us on Patreon and begin.
