Forseti
The Presiding One, The Bridge-Builder
Forseti’s name translates to presiding one or bridge-builder and he is one of the twelve major gods of the Northern Tradition. He is primarily known as the god of justice, fairness, peace, and reconciliation. Forseti resides in Ásgard in the shimmering hall of silver and gold called Glitnir, which serves as a divine courthouse where he resolves disputes as a judge. He is the son of Baldr and Nanna.
While Forseti does not appear often in the lore, his role as a divine mediator is significant. He is honored for his ability to settle disputes and bring peace without the need for violence. Forseti is associated with the Thing, the sacred assembly where legal matters were discussed and resolved.
Forseti’s worship was particularly prominent in Frisia, an area bordering Germany and Holland, where he was regarded as a chief deity. His veneration spread through Scandinavia and was carried to England by Anglo-Saxon raiders.
A famous legend about Forseti involves the Frankish King Charles Martel. Martel tried to force the Frisian Law-Speakers to convert to Christianity under the threat of execution. The Law-Speakers chose exile and set out on a boat without oars. They prayed for help, and a thirteenth man appeared, bearing a gleaming golden axe. He guided their boat safely to shore and caused a fresh-water spring to burst forth from the earth. The man introduced himself as Fosite and then disappeared. The site of the spring became a sacred shrine. Christian writers later replaced Fosite with Saint Willebrord.
Forseti is often compared to Tyr, as both gods are associated with law and justice. Forseti is honored as the god who presides over the Thing, where legal matters are debated and decided. Modern Heathens revere him as a god of peace and the sanctity of space.
